Advent Letter

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

A blessed Advent season to you! May you find peace and comfort during this busy time of year.

At this, the beginning of the new church year, I reflect back on a 2017 that saw our church family make several significant changes: an updated Sanctuary/Gathering Space to worship God; a brand new Life Together Hall to support adult learning and improve fellowship with one another; improved office space; and a new kitchen to prepare meals.

During this past year, the Former Things, New Things capital campaign raised $207,000. Praise be to God for the abundant resources given by our church members! Thank you for your faithful giving to the capital campaign. At the same time, while the leadership is thankful for the capital giving, we recognize that general giving is not meeting our spending guideline—the giving necessary to maintain ministry, education, staff salaries, and all that we cherish at Mountain View Lutheran Church.

Overall, current general giving only meets 96% of the spending guideline. At the beginning of December, this puts our church at a shortfall of $31,000, a shortfall that has resulted in a significant decrease in our financial reserves. This is a trend that is not sustainable and I am asking for the church to respond. We are called to action. We are called to use our hands and resources to love our neighbor because Christ loved us first.

“Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and truth.”
—1 JOHN 3:18

When I opened my mail yesterday, I counted eight charities asking for money.  If you give money in December to outside organizations, please consider giving to Mountain View Lutheran Church’s general fund as well. Mountain View Lutheran is unique when compared to other charities, as this is where we hear the Gospel message, receive the gift of bread and wine, and respond to the neighbor by the persuasion of the Holy Spirit.

I am asking you to prayerfully consider increasing your giving, whether as a one-time gift or a sustained increase for next year. Let’s use our financial resources to do God’s work at Mountain View Lutheran Church.

Peace be with you,
Sonja Dahl
