“Jesus’ Text, Psalm 22”
Psalm 22 is an individual lament, one of many in the book Psalms. Laments have a common structure (below) that we will discuss. The following parts do not all appear in each lament and some parts may repeat. Print out the outline or write it down to refer to when we meet.
Outline and Structure of the Individual Lament
- Call to God.
- Complaint/problem. (Three sources of the problem: God, others, self.)
- Declaration of trust.
- Petition/request to deliver.
- Words of assurance. (Perhaps from a priest.)
- Vow/praise.
Here are a few of the many individual laments: Psalms 3; 6; 10; 13; 36; 41; 54-56; 61; 69; 88; 102; 120; 142. If you have time, you may wish to read through some of them and see if you can identify the parts of the structure that occur in them.
